One population in America often overlooked during prayer time is law enforcement officers. The organization Wives Behind the Badge, Inc. is sponsoring the second annual National Day of Prayer for Law Enforcement on June 15. They are calling people from all faith backgrounds to unite in prayer to support the nation’s peacekeepers.
These law enforcement officers and their families are in a war on a daily basis. In 2011, 173 officers were killed in the United States in the line of duty. The website odmp.org reports 67 deaths from gunfire, 35 from automobile accidents and 12 from vehicular assault. Officers are exposed to other risks as well, including animal attacks, drowning, explosions, stabbings, training accidents, heat exhaustion and more.
“As law enforcement family members, we pray every day that our officers return home safely. We cry at the news of another fallen officer. And we reach out to the law enforcement community around us for support and reassurance,” says a Wives Behind the Badge statement. “Now we are asking the community around us to do the same.”
